Represenative thad altman
Thad Altman has lived in east Central Florida for more than fifty years. He played baseball at the University of Houston, and later completed his undergraduate studies with a Bachelor of Science from Rollins College in 1987. Thad lives in Indialantic with his wife Mary Pat and their youngest son. Their oldest son is in college and their daughter lives in NYC.
He is a driving force for better policies that helps small businesses create jobs in the Space Coast for the long-term. Thad supports legislation providing tax incentives to promote aerospace and high-tech jobs in Florida. He is also a champion of the environment including the Indian River Lagoon.
Thad previously served in the Florida Senate from 2008-2016 and the Florida House of Representatives from 2003-2008. Although his tenure in the Florida Senator termed out two years early due to redistricting, Thad's passion to serve did not. In November 2016 he won the race to serve District 52 in the House of Representatives.
During the 2017 Legislative Session Thad served on the following committees: Health & Human Services Committee; Criminal Justice Subcommittee; Children, Family & Seniors Subcommittee; Government Operations & Technology Appropriations; and Natural Resources & Public Lands Subcommittee.
When serving in the Florida Senate, Thad secured funding for the restoration and preservation of the Indian River Lagoon specifically in Brevard County; he proposed unanimous juries for capitol offenses; he won the fight to prevent the Department of Children and Families from setting up a state registry of Florida gun owners; he fought for no texting and driving laws; and supported our U.S. Veterans. Thad was Chairman of the Senate Military Affairs and Domestic Security Committee and Vice Chairman of the Budget Subcommittee of Finance and Tax. He also served on the Budget Committee; Budget Subcommittee on Higher Education; Communication, Energy and Public Utilities Committee; Education Pre K - 12 Committee; Higher Education Committee; Reapportionment Committee; Regulated Industries Committee; and the Senate Select Committee on the Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee Basin.
During Thad's previous tenure as a State Representative from 2003 to 2008. He represented District 30 as Chair of the Education Innovation and Cancer Preparation Committee, member of the Environmental Protection and Financial Institutions Committee and was appointed by the House Speaker to the boards of Space Florida and Workforce Florida. His efforts increased high-tech and aerospace jobs in Central Florida, equipped our schools to better prepare Florida children and assisted military families.
As Brevard County Commissioner from 1985 to 1992, Thad's initiatives helped create the Brevard Zoo and bring the new VA clinic and spring training to Viera. These efforts brought new, permanent jobs to Brevard. He served in Brevard as Chairman of the County Commission, Chairman of the Tourist Development Commission and Chairman of the Regional Planning Commission.
